Knowledge: With long term experience comes knowledge and the ability to ensure everything is surgically ready when needed. Layout, equipment, operating table setup and positioning aids - Ready based on surgical preferences.
Knowledge based skill and creativity: Positioning patients for surgical procedures require considerations that include the unknown. State and limitations or abilities of patient, unknown trauma, physical incapacity or abilities +++ are variables that OTA's navigate consistently throughout every day. Operating theatre assistants find solutions and make them work.
Dexterity and Ability: Pre-scrub, hold limbs for surgical prep, plugin surgical instruments and assist while maintaining sterile fields. Just a part of what we do daily.
Follow through: Upon surgical completion, we still do a lot. Transfer patient to bed or trolley then to recovery. Clean up the surgical environment and reset to next surgical procedure.
Clinical Continuance: We deliver a smooth transition from one surgical procedure to the next. Equipment setup / Patient positioned / Surgical prep / Surgery started then completed / Patient to recovery / Theatre now cleaned & reset for the next surgical procedure + so much more.
It's a big job with constant clinical performance requirements. It's a rewarding job too.
